September is National Preparedness Month

September if National Preparedness Month - an excellent time to think about what to do if a disaster or significant event occurs.  We suggest that you make a plan today. Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area. Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find.

An excellent resource is Ready.gov.  This site is designed to educate and empower the American people to prepare for, respond to and mitigate emergencies, including natural and man-made disasters. The goal of the campaign is to promote preparedness through public involvement.

Ready.gov asks individuals to do four key things:

  • Stay informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses
  • Make a family emergency plan.
  • Build an emergency supply kit.
  • Get involved in your community by taking action to prepare for emergencies.
