Storm Drainage Public Service Announcement

“The Fairbanks Storm Water Advisory Committee wants to remind the public to take special note of our local storm drains and ditches throughout the year!  Storm water can carry pollutants like lawn chemicals, grass clippings, soap suds from washing vehicles, motor oil, sediments, pet waste, and litter to our rivers, lakes, and streams.  We need your help to keep these pollutants OUT of our storm drains and ditches, which ultimately drain to our waterways.  For more information on storm water and how it affects you, please visit the Fairbanks Storm Water Management website at: https://www.fnsb.gov/383/Fairbanks-Storm-Water-Management-Program

Roads and Pedestrian Trails

There are approximately 18 miles of city roads within the city limits and there are also several miles of state roads within the city. Public Works is only responsible for maintaining City roads while the State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities maintains the state roads. As a cost saving measure, Public Works does not perform major road construction or maintenance projects, but instead contracts with private contractors to perform this work. Public Works also contracts for snow plowing services on City roads.

There are over 11 miles of pedestrian paths throughout the City. The majority of these paths are state-owned. As a public service in winter, Public Works plows all the pedestrian paths throughout the City regardless whether they are City or state-owned. Public Works also sweeps these paths in the spring and summer.

There are LED streetlights on the majority of the City’s streets. Public Works is responsible for maintaining these lights.

Parks and Recreational Facilities

There are 10 parks within the City and three schools that also have selected recreational facilities available for public use. The City operates and maintains eight of the parks; the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains two parks; and the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District maintains the recreational facilities on school grounds. The Parks & Recreation link in the menu to the right provides information on North Pole parks and recreational facilities.

Beautification

Public Works has initiated an effort to provide leadership for the beautification of the City’s main street—Santa Claus Lane. Santa Claus Lane is a state-owned road, but because it is North Pole’s "main street", the City is taking the initiative to make it an attractive resource to improve the quality of life for our residents and make it attractive for visitors. Public Works' first effort included flower plantings in the three roundabouts in summer and installing Christmas displays in winter. Landscaping on Santa Claus Lane also includes turf plantings and decorative flower boxes, benches and trash cans. Public Works plans to expand the beautification efforts north and south of the roundabouts with additional flower plantings, flower baskets on the candy cane light poles and way finding signage.

Buildings and Grounds

Public Works maintains City buildings and grounds that includes landscaping, building maintenance and snow plowing around City facilities.
